A 19-year-old man riding a motorcycle died after being run over by a bus on Buliran Road in Barangay San Isidro, Antipolo City, on Friday morning.
The victim, identified as John Dessierra, was a local resident.
According to the victim’s cousin, John Christopher Dela Cruz, who witnessed the incident, they were both riding motorcycles after he had dropped him off at his workplace in a mall. They were trailing three buses at around 4:30 a.m.
It was stated by Dela Cruz that the victim attempted to overtake between the second and third buses but was sideswiped by the third bus. This caused him to lose his balance, leading to him being thrown off his motorcycle and run over by the bus.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“When I picked him up, I held him, and he said, ‘I can’t do it anymore.’ I told him to fight because Christmas was coming, and we still had so much to prepare for. He was gasping for air, and I told him he could make it. But then, he stopped responding,” Dela Cruz recounted.
The driver of the bus was tracked down by the Antipolo police in a theme park in Laguna, where he was arrested.
It was later revealed that the bus was a service vehicle for a school field trip and was en route to pick up students at the time of the incident.
“Three buses had been hired for this trip, and the third one was involved in the accident. This indicates that the first and second buses did not run over the victim. The incident occurred between the second and third buses, which we are currently reviewing,” stated PLtCol. Ryan Manongdo, acting chief of Antipolo police.
The bus driver claimed that he had not seen the motorcycle in his side mirror nor felt any impact as he drove along Buliran Road.
“If the victim was thrown because of me, it wasn’t intentional. To the victim’s family, I am deeply sorry for what happened,” the driver said.
The victim’s family plans to pursue legal action against the bus driver, who remains in the custody of the Antipolo Police Station and is facing charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide.
