Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina previously sentenced to death in Indonesia, was welcomed back to the Philippines on Wednesday morning after over 14 years of imprisonment. She arrived in Manila at 5:50 a.m., facilitated by a prisoner transfer agreement finalized by officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Bureau of Corrections in Jakarta.
In 2010, Veloso was arrested for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin, which she claimed was handed to her by recruiters. A near-execution in 2015 occurred when her recruiters were apprehended just before her scheduled execution. Veloso described her transfer as a "miracle," expressing hopes to celebrate Christmas with her family. Upon arrival, she will be taken to the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong for a five-day quarantine.
