Five individuals were shot at an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden, on Tuesday, according to police reports. The incident occurred at Campus Risbergska, approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm, and involved the suspected gunman among the injured.
Roberto Eid Forest, the local police chief, stated that the situation surrounding the investigation remains "somewhat unclear." He noted that it is not yet determined whether the shooting happened inside the school or if there were additional perpetrators involved. The gunman was reported to be one of those hospitalized, with four of the five victims undergoing surgery; one person is in critical condition while two others are stable and one has minor injuries.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the violence in Örebro as extremely serious, emphasizing that law enforcement is actively engaged at the scene and that the government is closely monitoring developments. The police have categorized the incident as "attempted murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offense."
Teacher Lena Warenmark reported that there were fewer students present at the school due to a national test earlier in the day. Students were sheltered in nearby buildings while other areas of the campus were evacuated. Eyewitness Andreas Sundling recounted hearing several loud bangs and screams as he barricaded himself inside a classroom.
Local hospitals prepared for potential casualties by clearing emergency rooms and intensive care units. An Orebro region spokesperson confirmed that four patients were admitted to Orebro University Hospital, although details regarding their conditions remain limited.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his condolences, calling it a "very painful day for all of Sweden" and highlighting the terror experienced by students confined to their classrooms. While school shootings are rare in Sweden, there have been several serious incidents in recent years, including a stabbing attack at a high school in Malmö in March 2022.
