Historic Philippine Documents Unveiled at National Library

The National Library of the Philippines in Manila recently held a significant ceremony on November 25, 2024, to unveil two historic documents: the Recovered Philippine Insurgent Records (PIR) and the Map of the Philippines attached to the 1898 Treaty of Paris.

The Map of the Philippines, which was part of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, was generously donated by former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and his wife, Ruth Carpio. This map is a crucial piece of history as it delineates the territorial boundaries of the Philippines as recognized in the treaty that ended the Spanish-American War.

The Recovered Philippine Insurgent Records are a collection of revolutionary documents that were originally seized by the United States and returned to the Philippines in 1957. These documents, which provide valuable insights into the Philippine Revolution, went missing during the 1980s and 1990s. Remarkably, three of these documents were recently recovered after being discovered for sale on eBay.

These historic documents are now on display in the National Library's gallery, offering the public a unique opportunity to view and study these important pieces of Philippine history.
